Why One-o-Clock?

The following is taken from The Story of Burgess Hill, published in 1933:

One O'clock Lane
how it got its name

…At an inquest on an old man in 1917 the Coroner (Mr G. Vere Benson) asked how "One O'clock" got its name. Miss Hills, of "One O'clock" Cottage, informed me: "The following is the little story, as told to my late father many years ago by a very old man, who said he had known this place all his life, but his name I never knew. In the days when we had a James for a King he (the King) was riding up the lane with his men, and seeing an old lady at the door he asked her the name of the place. She said it had not got a name. His Majesty then asked the time. She replied, 'One o'clock, sir' (probably she said 'sire'). The King answered, 'Then One o'clock it shall be.' It has been known by that name ever since. I cannot answer for the truth of the story. I give it as my father told it to me."

My home in Burgess Hill is situated at the point where Kings Way (once a footpath) crosses One O'clock Lane (now a footpath)
