"Square Rigger Days"

Thanks to Betty Christian on Pitcairn for naming the family in the photograph (right), and to Barbara Kuchau of Friends of Pitcairn for her research help.

The book "Square Rigger Days", first published in 1938, includes a photograph of a Pitcairn family on board a steam ship. The name of the ship isn't given in the book, but I have recently purchased a 1937 magazine "Shipping Wonders of the World" which was number 52 of a weekly part work. This magazine has the same photograph, still with no names, but the name of the ship is given as the Ruahine. Here is the caption from the magazine:

"Pitcairn Islanders to-day are the descendants of the mutineers of the Bounty. Fletcher Christian, the leader of the mutiny, sailed from Tahiti with eight companions and some natives to Pitcairn Island, where the settlement was established. This photograph was taken on board the Ruahine, a vessel of 10,870 tons gross belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company, during a visit to Pitcairn Island."

The book "Square Rigger Days" has been reprinted and is available at prices from £18.99 to E25.00 (shop around).
